Executive Director's Note

Dear AmCham Members and Friends,

April and June 2008 turned out to be hard-driving. Our April Trade Conference devoted to Trade, Transport and Transit in Kyrgyzstan has elaborated recommendations and an action plan. The recommendations include legislative, institutional and informative measures to the Government while the action plan would be used as an advocacy agenda of the business community. Together with our partner business associations such as  the Associations of Carriers and Forwarders as well as of Customs Brokers, we plan to bring the above documents to the table of the Trade Facilitation and Transport National Council under the Prime Minisiter’s office.

Conference

April 25-26, 2008

On April 25-26, 2008 the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) was held a Conference on “Trade, Transport and Transit in the Kyrgyz Republic: Opportunities and Challenges”.
The conference was held in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Bishkek and was hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in the Kyrgyz Republic with financial support from the Department of Commerce USA.

Recommendations from the participants Conference “Development of Trade, Transport and Transit in

Government of the Kyrgyz Republic

April 25-26, 2008

On April 25-26, AmCham held a conference on the “Development of Trade, Transport and Transit in the KR”, with representatives of State agencies and private sector. After going through constructive discussions, participants of the conference suggested their recommendations and action plan on developing Trade, Transport and Transit in the Kyrgyz Republic:
1)  To develop the strategy of Transportation Development in the KR and create a working group from representatives of business-associations and state agencies.

To lobby the decision of the Government on the favorable model of a single window for trade procedures of Kyrgyzstan and financial support for the corresponding model

AmCham Committee Chairs meeting

May 14, 2008

On May 14th, AmCham Committee Chairs meeting was held at the office of AmCham. The meeting involved discussing preparation issues of the annual AmCham members' meeting, the program of which includes a discussion of priorities and an ongoing work of AmCham; works of the committees; selection of new members to AmCham Board of Directors; prize winning ceremony for the best AmCham slogan contest; as well as the «Partner» Law company's initiative to form a Business Integrity, Mediation Development, Arbitration and Court Practice Committee.

Annual Meeting of Members of the American
Chamber of Commerce in the Kyrgyz Republic

June 5, 2008

On June 5th, 2008 AmCham held the annual meeting of its members at the Hyatt Regency Bishkek.  The meeting was attended by 71 member-companies of AmCham.  Welcoming remarks were made by U.S. Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, H.E. Ms. Marie Iovanovitch and Chairman of the Board of Directors, President TFI Glen Lockwood.

Business Management Game for Bishkek students

2-5 June 2008

From 2 June to 5 June 2008, AUCA Business Administration Program has organized a Business management game for the second year running. The game is presented in collaboration with Arnhem Business School in the Netherlands. KPMG is the sole sponsor of this event and have made it possible to bring professors Roel Kalkwijk and Piet Post to Kyrgyzstan to conduct this game for students in Bishkek. This was a unique opportunity for students to get practical business experience.

AmCham Survey Investment Climate, Transport &
Trade Facilitation

In September 2006, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched a new initiative to provide the U.S. government and other relevant institutions with a strategic business outlook vis-à-vis the emerging markets of Central Asia, the Caucasus, Ukraine and Turkey. The initiative, entitled Eurasia Business Platform (EBP), also allows members to create and maintain dialogue, access and strategic interaction with Eurasia's governments and business decision makers.

Yuriy Shulhan CEO of FINCA Micro Credit Company in Kyrgyzstan (FMCC), who has over 12 years of banking and microfinance experience in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia, holds a Systems Engineering degree from Lviv Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine, a PhD degree in Economics at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and is completing his 3rd and final year at the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. March 18, 2008

On March 18, 2008 “Monizam” company with the American Chamber of Commerce jointly organized the “UNIQUM” accessories and hairstyles collection show for spring and summer, as well as celebrating “NOORUZ” holiday.
AmCham provided informational support for this unique event. A conceptual collection of modern Kyrgyz images was presented at this event, in the context of national traditions as influenced by world fashion trends.

Fashion Week in the Kyrgyzstan

17-23 March 2008

From 17-23 March, Promotion Center VitLine held the Spring 2008 Fashion Week Kyrgyzstan, which has become a traditional annual event.
This most significant fashion event was held in the National Russian Drama Theater under the support of AmCham member FINCA. The presentations included shows of fashion designers, clothes manufacturers and accessories of well-known labels.
