Letter from the Executive Director

On September 16 of last year Ame-rican Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan has celebrated its 10th anniversary.
There were a lot of reasons to cele-brate: an existence of a sustainable business community which is a truly international businessmen,s forum. All activities of AmCham in Uzbekistan were targeted to the improvement of the business climate and to the introduction of  international corporate governance and business ethics practices.

The work of AmCham committees (some of them more active and some less) was always orientated on bringing together representatives of different types and sizes of businesses in order to elaborate together proposals and suggestions on trade and investments enhancement and improvements in hospitality industry sector to enlarge the outcome of the tourism sector. Recommendations on better accounting practices and assistance in establishing contacts with the official bodies, as well as participation on round tables on tax, accounting and customs issues brought into the meeting rooms representatives of many AmCham companies. Globalization of the nature of doing business is the reflection of practically all features and aspects of existing of American Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan.

Saying this brings me to present to all AmCham members a wonderful gift the archive finding of a family member of Mr Natoo, the President of “Sitara International” Tourism Company. These are photos from the “Turkestanskie Vedomosti” newspaper issue #39 dated February 18, 1917 with the announcement of the opening of the branch of Russian-American Chamber of Commerce in Tashkent.
Is it not a remarkable fact that at the dawn of the 20th century business people in Turkistan so acutely realized importance of doing business together and the establishment of the equal playing grounds for all market participants?

I think that this piece of archive information should serve to all of us as a reminder of a prevalence of business interests over any political tensions. The work for the economic development, for the establishment of profitable business, considering its social impact those are the ultimate goals of entrepreneurial behavior for the 21st century.

Looking forward to continue to help AmCham members in all their endeavors,

Tatiana Okunskaya
